When an overproduction of oil in the sebaceous glands mixes with dead skin, it can clog pores and lead to acne. Anyone can get acne, but this skin condition is more prevalent in teens because of the increased hormonal activity that happens during puberty. Other factors that can contribute to acne include stress, poor diet, and hormone fluctuations during menstruation and pregnancy.

Mild to moderate acne will often go away with the use of over the counter creams, gels, and cleansers that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. But severe acne is not as easy to get rid of; it may require the know-how of a dermatologist.

A dermatologist will evaluate the skin, and determine the best way to combat acne. Dermatologists commonly prescribe topical antimicrobials, topical retinoids, or oral antibiotics to kill acne causing bacteria, reduce inflammation, and heal breakouts.

Oral contraceptives keep overactive sebaceous glands under control, so it often used as a long-term solution for acne in women. However, oral contraceptives may not be appropriate for women who smoke, have blood-clotting disorders, or are over the age of thirty-five.

Cystic acne is the hardest type of acne to treat, and may require a dermatologist to administer corticosteroid injections directly to the lesions to reduce inflammation and encourage healing. If this type of acne left untreated, it can cause unsightly scarring and permanent damage to the skin.

Even when acne clears, it can always comeback. So to minimize repeated breakouts,

• wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser
• keep your hands out of your face to prevent transferring dirt and bacteria
• use cosmetics labeled “Non-Comedogenic” or “Oil-Free”
• don’t sleep with makeup on your face
• shower immediately after exercising to prevent salt from drying on your skin and clogging pores
• Keep your hands out of your face to prevent the transmission of dirt and bacteria
